RICHMOND, Calif. —

More than 100 people gathered Friday night in a Richmond park Friday night to remember a young victim of gun violence who died this week as he was trying to improve his community.

Police said they have few leads in the killing of the 20-year-old Lincoln Plair Monday afternoon. They said the shooting was targeted, but they aren't sure why.

He was washing a car for a family he often helped when at least two men approached him. When the shooting erupted, witnesses said he managed to push two young girls out of the way.

"These moments, these little girls are going to enjoy their parents, their families, their future husbands and children owe this man everything," said friend Susie Garcia.

Plair died at the scene, leaving behind his 79-year-old father, to whom he was caregiver.

His death has devastated his community.

Friday night's candlelight vigil was held at Pogo Park, a playground he helped build in the notorious Iron Triangle -- an area known for violence.

Grief stricken family and friends told KTVU that Plair brought joy to those around him.

"My heart is crying," said Bennie Singleton, a Richmond resident. "I feel the pain. Every time this happens, it hurts so bad. "

Plair worked at the park as a handyman and spent many unpaid hours picking up syringes and other debris to make it safe for children.

Friends and family say his loss is immeasurable.

"We never in a million years thought that he would be murdered, killed like this on the streets," said the victim's cousin Kimberly White. "We just hope that whoever did this this to him that they confess. They touched a lot of lives around here."

The community also marched in memory of Plair on Friday night.

Friends will be holding a car wash tomorrow at Pogo Park to raise money to help his family
