DALY CITY, Calif. —
A car accident in the parking lot of a church in Daly City left a 6-year-old girl dead and two others injured Saturday morning, a police sergeant said.
Officers responded to a call of a car accident involving three pedestrians in the parking lot of St. Andrew Catholic Church at 1571 Southgate Ave. at about 9 a.m., Sgt. Michael Barton said.
Medical personnel treated the three pedestrians, all suffering from life-threating injuries, at the scene and then transported them to San Francisco General Hospital, Barton said.
The 6-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, the sergeant said.
The other two victims were women in their mid-40's and one of the women is the girl's mother.
The Reyes family came for Saturday afternoon's regularly scheduled mass and they witnessed the crash.
They said they were at the church in the morning and saw the three victims after the accident, including the young girl.
“I was happy to see her breathing, but I know that she was in shock,” said Gennis Reyes, of Pacifica.
Reyes said she saw the three victims taken away by ambulances, but didn't realize the 6-year-old girl had died.
"The little girl died, oh, my God," Reyes said.
The shock and sadness spread through the church.
Even though the victims' names have not been released, people in the close knit community are expecting to know them.
“It could be someone that we knows relative, or someone and I'm just shocked,” said Mae Alferez, a South San Francisco resident.
“Our prayers are with the family,” said Nancy Pope, a Pacifica resident.
Both victims are still in the hospital as of Saturday night.
Officers are still investigating what led up to the accident
Police said the driver of the mini-van was distraught at the scene and was not arrested or cited.
