A batch of drug-laced brownies could be to blame for sickening as many as 15 middle school students in Hayward Friday, according to family members.

The brother of one 13-year-old girl told KTVU the brownies were passed around during woodshop class at Martin Luther King Middle School located at 26890 Holly Hill Avenue.

The district would only confirm five students got sick, but some family members at the hospital insist it was more than that.

As kids walked out of the school Friday afternoon, many had already heard the news about someone handing out brownies made with marijuana and possibly other drugs.

"One of my sister's friends said 'Here's a brownie. Try it,'" said one student who did not want to give their name.

Genaro Palomino said his 13-year-old sister didn't know what was in the brownie.

He and a family friend rushed her to nearby St. Rose's Hospital after the school called to say she was throwing up.

"She felt drowsiness, tired, nervousness, tingling," said Palomino.

"The school board and the superintendent need to action on this, like, right away," said family friend Luis Hernandez. "It's not acceptable."

The girl's family said the school told them the brownies and cookies came from a student at nearby Tennyson High School.

The principal at King Middle School refused to speak to KTVU, but a district administrator says they contacted police, paramedics and parents when students started getting sick.

The district said it has also launched disciplinary action, but wouldn't say how many students were involved.

"I'm very much aware that there's drugs everywhere, but for this school to allow somebody from another school and a different grade level to come onto their campus and allow these kids to be exposed to this is ridiculous," said Hernandez.

KTVU reached out to Hayward police but did not received a response.
