Police are interrogating at least one person who exited a San Jose house where a standoff and a homicide occurred Friday morning, police spokesman Officer Jose Garcia said.

At 1:46 a.m., police received word of a stabbing at a residence in the 200 block of Cleveland Avenue, police said.

Officers arrived to find a man suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The man's identity has not been released pending confirmation by the Santa Clara County medical examiner and notification of the man's next of kin.

Residents of the home reported the stabbing, but locked themselves inside and told police they would not cooperate, police said.

Police believed residents of the house had guns, which is why police called in a SWAT team, Garcia said.

Police were cautious in their actions, Garcia said, because they did not want to force a confrontation.

As of 1:15 p.m., police had left the scene and were questioning a man who had holed himself up inside the home but later surrendered to police, Garcia said.

"If he turns out to be not involved in the homicides, we could still pursue criminal charges" for obstructing an investigation, Garcia said. "We're not in a position to speculate whether there's going to be an arrest or not."

Other individuals who exited the home are cooperating with investigators, he said.

Investigators have not yet determined the relationship between the residents and the stabbing victim, Garcia said.

Merritt Trace Elementary School, Hoover Middle School and Abraham Lincoln High School, all of which are located about a block away, adopted a modified shelter status, meaning that students could continue to attend class but were not allowed outside, Garcia said.

San Jose Unified School District spokeswoman Karen Fuqua said district officials re-opened the schools around 11 a.m.
