A girls' basketball coach at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa pleaded no contest Thursday in Sonoma County Superior Court to having oral sex with a 16-year-old student.
Andrew John Medeiros, 25, of Santa Rosa, was charged with two sex offenses with a person under age 18 on April 2. A preliminary hearing date was scheduled for July 10.
One of the two charges will be dismissed at sentencing on Aug. 22, according to the plea agreement. He faces three years in prison on the oral sex charge.
Medeiros was arrested April 11 at Piner High School, where he was employed as a student supervisor. He posted bond on $50,000 bail and is out of custody.
Medeiros met the 16-year-old girl at Cardinal Newsman High School where he was the girls' basketball coach last season, Sonoma County sheriff's Sgt. Carlos Basurto said.
The investigation began when the girl's parents contacted the sheriff's office after they discovered sexually explicit text messages between Medeiros and the alleged victim, Basurto said.
Medeiros also coached for the North Bay Elite Basketball Club. The club was founded in 2000 to provide elite high school girls basketball players with advanced instruction and exposure to higher level competition, according to its website.
