OAKLAND, Calif. —

A suspect was in custody early Friday after fatally crashing into a car while fleeing police and three others were dead following two separate shootings during a violent overnight on the streets of Oakland, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officer Sam Morgan said CHP officers who are patrolling the streets of Oakland attempted to make a stop for speeding at 11:25 p.m. at Bancroft and 98th Avenues.

The driver initially pulled over the BWM M6 roadster, but when the CHP officers got out of their car, he quickly made a U-turn and sped away at a high rate of speed.

The officers lost sight of the vehicle but came upon an accident scene at 98th near Golf Links Road a short time later. The BWM had careened into a black Lincoln and veered off the road.

Two suspects attempted to flee the BMW on foot, but the driver was captured by the pursuing officers.

One person – a woman in her 20s -- in the Lincoln suffered fatal injuries, two others were transported to the hospital with major injuries and a fourth was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Morgan said the second suspect remained at large and the incident was under investigation. The BMW had not been stolen, he added.

Meanwhile, Oakland’s 2012 homicide rate jumped to 130 when three people were killed in two separate incidents overnight.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 800 block of Mead Avenue around 1 a.m., where they found two people shot to death, according to police.

Police said that around 2:30 a.m., police were called to a report of a stabbing in the 5800 block of Walnut Street. The victim had been stabbed to death.

No information about suspects in either incident was available.
