FAIRFIELD, Calif. —

Four 2-liter plastic bottles containing crude devices exploded early Wednesday in the middle of a residential street, disrupting the quiet of a Fairfield neighborhood, authorities said.

Fairfield police Lt. Greg Hurlbut said arriving officers found the remains of four devices and a fifth in the middle of Hickory Avenue near Linden Avenue.

“We got a call about a loud explosion out here in the neighborhood,” he told reporters. “Officers got on scene and found a bunch of debris on the roadway. They noticed there was one device that had not detonated so they cordoned off the area. We had neighbors shelter in their homes and called out the bomb squad.”

The bomb squad rendered the fifth device harmless. Hurlbut said they could have been part of a dangerous prank.

“When they detonate the bottle, it gets shredded,” he said. “They could injure someone quite severely depending upon where they were standing. They are quite dangerous.”

While the incident remained under investigation, Hurlbut said he did not believe they were meant to target anyone specifically.

“They weren’t place in a manner to indicate they were aimed at a particular person or any object,” he said. “They were just placed in the middle of the street…. It’s a common homemade device. Not intended to create a lot of havoc, but built for entertainment purposes.”

While it may have been a prank, the explosions have neighbors on edge.

“I was lying in bed about 6 or 6:30 a.m.,” Ray Nelson, a 22-year resident of the neighborhood said. “I heard two explosions – I thought I was dreaming.”

Mary Schmutzler, a 24-year resident of the neighbor, was likewise shaken.

“I’m shocked,” she told KTVU. “It’s unbelievable.”

Hurlbut said there was no description as of yet of the suspect or suspects who set off the explosions.
