Four people were injured early Sunday after an allegedly intoxicated driver crashed into the rear of another vehicle that then caught fire on state Highway 1 in Santa Cruz, according to the California Highway Patrol.
David Fairbanks, 26, was driving with two passengers in a 2001 Mitsubishi car headed south on the highway near Market Street at about 7:15 a.m. Sunday when his car rear-ended a 1995 Chevrolet directly ahead of it, CHP officials said.
The force of the collision pushed the Chevrolet onto the west side shoulder of the highway, where it caught fire, according to the CHP.
The Mitsubishi overturned and came to rest on its left side in the center median, CHP officials said.
One of the passengers in the Mitsubishi, Karina Orendaycuevas, 26, of Aptos, suffered moderate injuries and was flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, according to the CHP.
The other passenger, Momen Abdallahbassio, 29, of Aptos, was treated for minor injuries at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.
Fairbanks and the driver of the Chevrolet, Hy Nguyen, 71, of San Jose, suffered minor injuries and were not hospitalized.
CHP officers placed Fairbanks under arrest and believe he was intoxicated at the time of the collision, according to CHP Officer Brad Sadek.
