FREMONT, Calif. —

Police in Fremont on Tuesday did something they've never done before to try and catch a thief: putting surveillance video of a recent burglary on Youtube.com that shows a woman stealing a delivered package.

Authorities warn that there may be more thefts as delivered packages are left on doorsteps during the holiday season.

The surveillance video shows the front porch of Fremont resident Trevor Fiatal's home this past Saturday morning. It shows the package from Amazon.com being delivered, but about 20 minutes later a woman appears who Fiatal does not know.

The package contained a pair of boots worth $115.

The woman can also be seen taking a bag of canned food meant for the local food bank.

What the woman didn't realize was that a surveillance camera was not only recording video, but also e-mailing photos during the theft.

"At a minimum, a camera that covers your front porch where you packages are delivered is super helpful," noted Fiatal.

Fremont police told KTVU that mail and package theft have only increased during the holiday season as internet shopping has become more popular.

Officers have several recommendations to avoid such thefts, including requiring a signature on all deliveries and leaving special instructions on where to put the package.

"You can also ask the delivery company to hold the package if they have a local delivery center in hopes that they do that for you," recommended Geneva Bosques of the Fremont Police Department.

"I do hope that they catch the folks that did this, because usually its not just one theft," said Fiatal.

Fremont police put the video on Youtube and so far it has more than 300 views.

Authorities are hoping someone will recognize the woman and call police.

On a side note, Amazon.com replaced Fiatal's boots for free following the theft.
