CONCORD, Calif. —

Police in Concord were searching for the driver in a hit-and-run accident Tuesday night who reportedly struck and dragged a four-year-old girl for half a block with his vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Officers were still at the scene investigating the incident at 10 p.m. near the intersection of Sixth Street and Clayton Boulevard with crime tape surrounding the area where the girl was struck and dragged.

Neighbors told KTVU the girl was hit by a car as she was crossing the street in front of her apartment. They said she and her seven-year-old sister often played outside the complex by themselves.

Police said they received a 911 call reporting the hit and run around 6:30 p.m. when they arrived, they found the four-year-old laying injured in the roadway.

The vehicle initially stopped after the impact, but then continued moving, dragging the girl for a half a block before stopping again. The second time the car stopped, the girl became disengaged from the car and was no longer dragged when the driver fled the scene entirely.

The young victim sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Oakland. She suffered major injuries to her leg and head, but was expected to survive.

An area resident who saw the aftermath of the hit-and-run described a deeply traumatizing scene.

"She was conscious and crying. She was in a lot of pain and the mom was hysterical," said neighbor Alejandra Alvarez. "I love that little girl. She was so nice."

Police have released a description of the vehicle that struck the little girl. They said they were looking for a light blue late model pickup truck with oversized tires. The truck does not have a camper shell.

Investigators said there may be damage to the passenger side front headlights. Authorities ask that anyone with information regarding the case call Concord Police Officer Ron Bruckert immediately at 925-671-3311 ext. 4365.
