SANTA CRUZ, Calif. —
A man suffering from apparent drug withdrawal died in the Santa Cruz County Main Jail after jail personnel found him unresponsive in his bed Tuesday evening, according to the sheriff's office.
Jail staff checked on the 47-year-old inmate at 6:42 p.m. and found that he was not responding, Santa Cruz County sheriff's officials said.
On-site medical and corrections staff tried to revive him, without success. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No foul play was suspected, according to the sheriff's office.
The man had a "significant history of substance abuse" and was suffering from withdrawal symptoms when he died, sheriff's officials said in a news release.
The inmate's name had not been released by Wednesday afternoon.
