CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. —
A Castro Valley man who refused to vacate his mobile home when faced with eviction Thursday afternoon was taken down cursing by a sheriff's K-9, ending an hour-long standoff with law enforcement.
The proprietor of the Tra-Tel Trailer Park in the 3700 block of Castro Valley Road attempted to serve an eviction notice to one of her tenants, but, according to Alameda County sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson, the man holed himself up in his trailer with what the landlady believed was a shotgun. The woman called the sheriff's office at about 1 p.m., and deputies responded, establishing a perimeter and evacuating approximately 20 residents and guests who were home at the time.
Deputies attempted to contact the man, Fred Murphy, 54, by placing calls to a phone inside the trailer. When there was no response they resorted to a patrol car loud speaker, but to no avail, Nelson said.Murphy opened the trailer's main door and a screen door, and he stepped partially outside, flipped off the deputies, and allegedly said "F--- you guys!" before stepping back inside, Nelson said.
Although the screen door had closed, Murphy did not close the main door before sheriff's K-9 Bo busted through the screen and began biting Murphy, Nelson said.Murphy then redirected his obscenities at the dog, Nelson said, saying "F--- you, dog!" as Bo bit him in his leg and his mid-torso.Nelson said that Murphy was arrested on suspicion of making threats against the landlady and brandishing a replica weapon, which authorities determined was a pellet rifle.
Murphy was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for treatment and was expected to be booked at Santa Rita Jail upon his release, Nelson said.During the standoff, the California Highway Patrol assisted in providing traffic control along a closed stretch of nearby Norbridge Avenue, CHP Officer Daniel Jacowitz said. The road was closed between Castro Valley Boulevard and Redwood Road, and it reopened at about 2:20 p.m., Jacowitz said.
"His actions displaced a lot of people," Nelson said. "There's no question about that."
