Lakeport man sentenced for killing convicted rapist

LAKEPORT, Calif. —

Prosecutors say a Northern California man convicted in the killing of a convicted rapist he had mistakenly believed was a child molester will likely spend the rest of his life in prison after being sentenced Wednesday.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that 34-year-old Ivan Oliver was ordered to serve 32 years to life for the fatal stabbing of his neighbor, Michael Dodele, in a Lakeport mobile home park in 2007.

Prosecutors say Oliver stabbed the 67-year-old Dodele dozens of times after seeing him listed on the Megan's Law website. The online database lists personal information and past offenses committed by registered sex offenders.

Dodele had served more than 20 years in prison for the rapes of adult women, but a confusing entry led Oliver to believe Dodele was a convicted child molester.
