OAKLAND, Calif. —

Oakland police have arrested 11 people and confiscated 2,500 marijuana plants and 50 pounds of processed marijuana with a street value of more than $1 million during a raid on an East Oakland warehouse.

Assistant Police Chief Anthony Toribio said police also seized $40,000 in cash, three handguns, one shotgun, two assault weapons and a large quantity of ammunition in the raid, which was carried out in the 900 block of 89th Avenue at about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Toribio said officers, including members of the department's crime reduction and SWAT teams, found what he described as "a well-organized marijuana facility with a high-end video surveillance system" and other sophisticated security features.

He said police also found body armor, two ballistic helmets and two ballistic vests.

The SWAT team was involved in the raid because officers "were very concerned" about the likelihood that the people at the facility were well-armed, Toribio said.

He said he's not sure where the marijuana at the facility was going to be sent but said, "It's clear that it was grown for distribution to people."

The facility was not designated or authorized to be a marijuana dispensary, according to Toribio.

Police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said officers had been investigating the facility in recent weeks after receiving information about it from the community.

She described it as a large warehouse that takes up half of a city block, and said the marijuana operation took up about two-thirds of the building's interior.

Watson said investigators found growing rooms and drying rooms, as well as lighting and ventilation devices used in the cultivation of marijuana.

Toribio said U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officers participated in the raid, and that the suspects will likely face federal charges because there are longer sentences for drug offenses in federal court than in state court.

He said 10 men and one woman were arrested in the raid. Their names have not yet been released.
