SANTA CRUZ, Calif. —

A solemn convoy of several hundred police officers, firefighters and emergency medical staff left the Pacific shore on Thursday and threaded its way through the Santa Cruz mountains in a procession honoring two police detectives who were shot and killed during a routine investigation.

Santa Cruz police Sgt. Loran "Butch" Baker and Officer Elizabeth Butler were killed by Jeremy Goulet after they came to his house on Feb. 26 while investigating a misdemeanor sexual assault case.

Goulet was killed in a subsequent chase and shootout.

The city of Santa Cruz has set up a scholarship fund for the children of the two officers. To make a tax-deductible donation to the Butch Baker and Elizabeth Butler Scholarship Fund, click here.
