A man accused of a fatal stabbing in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood last weekend made his initial appearance in court today but declined to enter a plea.

Andre Reid, 28, was ordered held on $2 million bail and will return to court on Monday to enter a plea.

Reid is charged with murder for the death of Eric Avila, 52, who was stabbed at about 2 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of 25th and Connecticut streets.

Avila was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Assistant District Attorney Harry Dorfman, while requesting the $2 million bail amount, said Reid has multiple "significant" prior convictions but declined to elaborate.

No motive for the killing has been released by police or prosecutors.

The Archdiocese of San Francisco held a vigil this morning at the spot of the killing.

Julio Escobar, who organizes the vigils as the coordinator of the archdiocese's restorative justice programs, said, "We must not forget those who have passed away as a result of violence."

Escobar said, "They're dying for no reason."

Since October, the archdiocese has been holding the vigils for each murder victim in the city and is also planning a peace walk through the Mission District on Jan. 12.
