A man assaulted outside a Sausalito bar on Monday may be permanently blinded in one eye, police said.

Witnesses told police that Keith Karpinski, 66, was speaking with another man outside of Smitty's Bar at 214 Caledonia St. at around 2:04 a.m. when Karpinski was assaulted.

The other man, later identified as 25-year-old Kyle Algeo of Sausalito, allegedly knocked Karpinski into the street and hit him multiple times in the face.

Two other men attempted to break up the fight, but were also assaulted by another man, identified as Scott Newcomb, 35, of Oakland.

When police arrived, they found the three victims lying in the street bleeding from head wounds.

Algeo and Newcomb were arrested on suspicion of felony assault and public intoxication. They were both treated at Marin General Hospital before being booked into jail.

Algeo was also arrested on suspicion of assault likely to cause great bodily injury because of the severe injuries Karpinski suffered.

Karpinski underwent surgery and was later released from the hospital, but doctors are still unsure whether he will regain sight in his right eye, police said.

Newcomb posted bail and was released from police custody. Algeo remains in custody and is scheduled to be arraigned today, police said.
