An Oakland man pleaded not guilty Monday to a murder charge for the shooting death of an Emeryville man in Oakland in September.

Godfrey Jamal Jackson, 27, was arrested in Oakland on Dec. 13 for the fatal shooting of 24-year-old MiAndrew Rachal in the 900 block of West MacArthur Boulevard at about 2:40 a.m. on Sept. 6.

He had been on the run for more than three months before he was arrested.

In addition to murder, Jackson is charged with two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and violating his probation.

Jackson also is charged with two prior felony convictions that could add to his prison term if he's convicted: a 2007 lewd act with a child conviction that required that he become a registered sex offender and a second conviction for failing to comply with that requirement and register as a sex offender.

Officers who responded to reports of a shooting in the 900 block of West MacArthur Boulevard in the early morning hours of Sept. 6 found Rachal suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Oct. 15 Oakland police received a tip that Jackson was at a house in the 900 block of 21st Street in West Oakland but after an extensive search by SWAT officers he wasn't found.

Several streets in the area were blocked and police evacuated half a dozen homes in the immediate area.

Jackson, who is being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail, is scheduled to return to court on April 8 for a pretrial hearing.
