PETALUMA, Calif. —
A homeless man who reported an assault in Petaluma early Monday morning was arrested when officers found various narcotics in his car, police said.
Andrew Michael Smith, 35, called police around 2:20 a.m. Monday to report that he was attacked in the 100 block of Ellis Street, according to police.
As officers arrived they saw a suspect flee the area on foot and were flagged down by Smith, who was standing near his vehicle. The officers were unable to apprehend the fleeing suspect but saw a glass smoking pipe inside Smith's vehicle.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a small amount of methamphetamine, three digital scales, 34 prescription pills in a plastic bag, psilocybin mushrooms and more than $2,400 in cash, police said.
Smith, who is on felony probation for two separate narcotics possession convictions, was booked into Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of the new narcotics offenses.
