BRENTWOOD, Calif. —

An 87-year old man who went missing near Brentwood on Sunday was found safe at a gas station Monday afternoon, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Kenneth Kolthoff was reported missing at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday.

He had last been seen riding his bicycle in the 8400 block of Byron Highway at about 4:30 p.m. on his way to run an errand, Contra Costa County sheriff's officials said.

At about 2 p.m. Monday, someone who had seen news reports about Kolthoff's disappearance called police to say that Kolthoff was possibly at a gas station at Brentwood Boulevard and Lone Tree Way in Brentwood, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Deputies were dispatched to the gas station, where they found Kolthoff, who appeared to have gotten lost and spent the night riding around on his bike trying to get home, Lee said.

Kolthoff was in good health and was returned to his home on Virginia Drive.
