MONTE SERENO, Calif. —

Police are searching for a suspect in connection with a homicide during a home invasion robbery early Friday morning in Monte Sereno, according to authorities.

A man and a woman were at their residence in the 18000 block of Withey Road, near Beck Avenue, when a burglar entered the residence and ransacked the home, police said.

The female victim had been tied up, but was able to free herself and call police when the burglar left the residence at 1:36 a.m., police said.

Upon arrival, police located the male resident deceased inside the residence.

The female victim was transported by ambulance to a hospital with injuries not considered to be life threatening, police said.

The name of the deceased victim is not being released, pending family notification by the coroner's office, according to police.

The homicide and burglary remain under investigation, police said. Withey Road remained blocked off late into early Friday afternoon as police continued their search for clues.

Those who live nearby were stunned by the crime.

"This is really upsetting because I have two little kids. I live really close," said neighbor Marisa Demico. "This kind of thing doesn't happen in this neighborhood."

The slaying was Monte Sereno's first homicide of the year. This house is nestled among other multi-million dollar homes where crimes rarely occur.

Detectives spent the morning combing through the mansion and canvassing the grounds looking for clues.

"There's concern that the weather is going to change evidence, so we're working hard to collect any evidence there if there is evidence there outside the home," said Los Gatos Police Sgt.Kerry Harris.

Police are unsure if the home was targeted or if the robbery was random. The home is located off the beaten path and on a two lane road.

"It goes to show you this can happen anywhere to anybody and you have to take precautions," said neighbor Steve Mortara.

Neighbors told KTVU they don't know much about the people who live there just that it was an Indian couple who kept to themselves. Police are interviewing the woman and hope to get a detailed description of the suspect that they can release to the public.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department at (408) 827-3219 or after hours (408) 354-8600.
