ANTIOCH, Calif. —
An Antioch woman whose home and privacy were violated by burglars Wednesday night is now pleading for the return of one precious item -- her baby's ashes.Michiko Kiyoi, a single mother, said she and her children moved into the Antioch home just two months ago. She chose it because it's in a quiet neighborhood she thought was safe, but that changed Wednesday night when burglars ransacked her home.
"I feel raped," said Kiyoi. "You rape me of my privacy of my home and you stole from me."
Kiyoi, 35, said she is angry and sad that the thieves stole her televisions, jewelry and the Christmas presents she bought for her children.
But the one irreplaceable item she cherished was a silver, heart-shaped urn containing the remains of her infant son who died at birth in January. On the urn was engraved her son's name, Gabriel, and the date of his death.
Kiyoi showed KTVU where the urn was kept in her bedroom closet. She said it was placed inside a jewelry box
Now she fears the thieves will discard it, because her baby's remains are of no value to them.
"I beg you, do not dump my baby, do not discard him like trash," Kiyoi said. "He was loved and he was wanted by his family."
Kiyoi said she and her children attend grief counseling for the death of her baby on Wednesday nights and when they returned last night they found their home burglarized.
"No questions asked, just return my baby's remains," she said to KTVU, wiping tears from her eyes.
Kiyoi said this has been a turbulent year. She lost her job in June and her family was homeless for a few months until they moved into their current home with hopes of better times ahead.
The baby was diagnosed with Down syndrome and spine problems while in utero. Doctors told Kiyoi to end the pregnancy, but she doesn't believe in abortion and carried him for 7 1/2 months.
