Neighborhood outraged by slow police response times

OAKLAND, Calif. —

Oakland Police got an earful from residents in the northeastern part of the city Thursday night who were angered by recent police response times to a  number of neighborhood crimes.

One recent incident in particular in which a woman was robbed and beaten in her own garage outraged residents.

Neighbors in the Dimond District said it took police as much as 30 minutes to respond despite several calls to 911.

That prompted many to attend the meeting with Oakland police. It was standing-room-only Thursday night and the fear and frustration were palpable.

One woman said one house was hit four or five times and another twice on her corner.

Last week, a woman was robbed and pistol-whipped in the garage of her home near Tiffin and Waterhouse roads in the Oakmore neighborhood near Oakland's Dimond district.

Neighbors said the woman bled profusely and there was no sign of police or paramedics even after repeated 911 calls.

"They need to find a way to be more responsive," said Andrea Dawson.

Police apologized. "I'm going to admit, I'm a human being and we're run by human beings and we do make mistakes," offered Oakland police Capt. David Downing.

While investigators couldn't talk specifics about the case, they said they are looking into what happened and thanked neighbors for a good description of the suspects' getaway car.

Yet many remain fed up with the city's lack of officers on the street in neighborhoods where crime is on the rise.
