Oakland man convicted of '08 witness murders

OAKLAND, Calif —

An Oakland man is headed to prison for
life for shooting a man, then killing two girls who witnessed it.

The Oakland Tribune reports that a jury
convicted 22-year-old Gumaro Baez this week of two counts each of
murder and attempted murder.

Alameda County prosecutors say Baez blamed an acquaintance for
the death of his brother, so he shot him while the two were hanging
out inside a van in February 2008. Baez then allegedly shot the
other three people in the van to eliminate witnesses.

The targeted victim and another man survived, but 15-year-old
Dominique Hoover-Brown and 17-year-old Melissa Jackson died.

During Baez's trial, prosecutors cited a letter he allegedly
wrote to a fellow jail inmate in which he admitted the killings.
Baez denied it, maintaining that his friend was the killer.
