HAYWARD, Calif. —

A failed traffic stop resulted in a fatal officer-involved shooting in Hayward early Sunday morning, the third officer-involved shooting in the Bay Area in just over 24 hours.

Hayward Police told KTVU that officers began following a suspicious vehicle just before 3:30 a.m.

According to police reports, after the officers pulled over the suspects’ vehicle, the suspects sped off after the police had exited their vehicle.

Instead of just trying to get away, the officers said that the suspects tried to run down one of the officers. who fired at the car, which crashed into a sign a few blocks away, near the Casa Blanca Motel on D St.

"I heard ‘pop.pop, popp pop,’ and that woke me up," said Sabrina Dorsett, a neighbor.

One person, later determined to be the passenger, died at the scene and the driver ran off after the crash but did not get far before he was taken into custody.

Though it was unclear at first, investigators confirmed later Sunday morning that the suspect died from the officer's gunfire.

At the time of the incident, a civilian was in the patrol car on a ridealong with the officers.

Sunday’s incident in Hayward followed a fatal officer-involved shooting in San Francisco early Saturday morning and another in San Jose that afternoon. All three incidents were in response to suspects fleeing police.
