SAN JOSE, Calif. —

One man was killed and two others wounded when a gunman opened fire outside a San Jose bar early Sunday, authorities said.

The three men had been at a birthday party at Carlos Goldstein's Bar at 1150 Murphy Ave. when they went outside and were shot while in the parking lot, police said.

Officers had responded to reports of a fight at 12:44 a.m. and found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

The two were transported to a local hospital by ambulance, but one died from his injuries.

A third victim walked into the emergency room at a local hospital with a gunshot wound, and police determined that he was shot during the same incident.

Brandon Renteria and his band were performing at the restaurant Saturday night when the fighting started.

“Everybody moved back to the patio area, and there was a lot of fighting,” Renteria said. “Security tried to maintain it as best as possible and move everybody out.”

The then fight spilled out into the parking lot.

The fight escalated to shots fired and that's when police officers arrived, said San Jose police Lt. Jeremy Bowers.

“It's pretty scary,” Renteria said. “Normally when we play here, we don't have rowdiness, we don't have out of control crowds like this.”

Police said they don't know what sparked the fight. They were still interviewing witnesses Sunday, trying to determine who the gunmen were.

Earlier, police responded to the 1100 block of Chen Street at 12:09 a.m. after a male victim reported to 911 that he had been shot.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

No arrests have been made.

The fatal shooting is San Jose's fifth homicide of 2012.
