RICHMOND, Calif. —
A man was shot and killed at the Richmond BART station Thursday evening during rush hour, BART police said.
Multiple calls reported gunfire, including a BART station agent, at 6:22 p.m., BART officials said. The shooting was also reported by Richmond police's ShotSpotter system.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was found shot on the stairs near the 19th Street and MacDonald Avenue entrance to the station. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after he was found.
BART police officers, armed with flashlights gathered evidence Thursday as commuters tried to get home after work. A police dog was used in the search for clues.
One shaken passenger told KTVU she had just exited a BART train when she heard four gunshots.
“Everyone ran towards the back of the BART station downstairs,” said Jennifer Williams, a BART passenger. “People were scared and didn't know what was going on.”
A source told KTVU the victim, an African American man in his early 30s from Richmond, was walking on the stairs leading out of the BART station, when two African American men shot him at the top of the stairs.
“I saw a woman giving him mouth to mouth resuscitation, doing CPR on him, I just had no words. I just started crying after that,” Williams said.
A source told KTVU the gunmen followed the victim from a train, but police said they do not know whether they had been riding BART prior to the shooting
“They appeared to have fled on foot,” said Steve Coontz, BART police officer. “We're still working on a good description of the suspects. As soon as we get one, we'll put it out because we want help from the public in locating these people.”
BART police said train service was not disrupted because this station remained open and people can get into the station from the other side.
