PITTSBURG, Calif. —

A man who was fatally shot at a Pittsburg gas station on Tuesday has been identified by the coroner's office as 20-year-old Timothy Smith, Jr.

Smith, a Pittsburg resident, died at a hospital hours after being shot in the head at the Union 76 gas station at 2150 Railroad Ave. around 9 a.m., police said.

Investigators are searching for a person of interest in the case, identified by police Tuesday afternoon as Bay Point resident Brian Keith Fox, 22.

Pittsburg police Lt. Ron Raman said a motive has not been determined in the killing, but that it appears Smith was the intended target.

An employee at the gas station who declined to give his name said that at the time of the shooting, he heard loud noises and saw customers running, but did not see a gunman.

He said police later interviewed multiple customers who were pumping gas before the gunfire erupted.

Officers used witness descriptions to track the shooter's vehicle to a home in the 100 block of Marin Avenue in Bay Point Tuesday morning.

Anyone with information about this case or Fox's whereabouts is asked to call Pittsburg police at (925) 646-2441.
