PITTSBURG, Calif. —

Police have released the name of a man arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder for a double shooting in Pittsburg that killed a local teenager and injured another.

Julius Robert Short, Jr., 23, was arrested with the aid of a SWAT team at his Pittsburg home on Tuesday morning, police Lt. Ron Raman said.

The arrest came the day after the shooting, which killed 16-year-old Steven Rosalez and injured Rosalez' friend, another 16-year-old Pittsburg boy.

The shooting, reported around 7:45 p.m. Monday in the 100 block of West Eighth Street, is believed to have stemmed from an earlier fight between Short and the two teens, Raman said.

Both victims were taken to hospitals. Rosalez died from his injuries, and the second boy was treated and released.

Police said Short is on felony probation and has an extensive criminal history.

He is being held in county jail in Martinez on $1 million bail.

"We are going to be presenting our case to the district attorney's office on murder charges," Raman said today.

Rosalez' death is Pittsburg's first homicide this year.

Community members are mourning the loss of the teenager, who was enrolled at an alternative school within the Pittsburg Unified School District and attended Pittsburg High School last year, Pittsburg High Principal Todd Whitmire said.

Whitmire described Rosalez as a "typical teen in many regards" who had a girlfriend and excelled on the baseball field.

"He was very normal ... we're all surprised," he said.

"It's sad to see a young man's life snuffed out -- had there not been guns involved, he'd probably still be alive today," Whitmire said.

Whitmire said the school's counseling offices are open to grief-stricken students and faculty in the wake of the killing.
