SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Sacramento police say an armed man who held two women hostage inside a Jack in the Box restaurant has been shot and the women have been released unharmed.

Officer Doug Morse said the suspected gunman was taken to a hospital after being shot during Saturday's standoff with SWAT officers.

His condition was not immediately known.

The Sacramento Bee reports police surrounded the restaurant after receiving reports of an armed robbery inside. Two women in the restaurant were held hostage, but one was released about 2 hours later. The other woman ran out after police fired several shots and detonated three concussion grenades.

Nearby businesses were evacuated, some locked down, during the standoff.
