SAN JOSE, Calif. —

A Hispanic male suspect who allegedly groped at least four female students as they slept in their beds at a dorm on the campus of San Jose State University early Friday was arrested, according to authorities.

KTVU learned at around 12:30 p.m. that a suspect matching the description given by victims in the gropings had been taken into custody. Police told KTVU that surveillance video was key in making the arrest.

The suspect, 21-year-old Michael Alexander Escobar, was arrested by SJSU police around noon at an off-campus location, university spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris said. He is a SJSU junior maroing in sociology but was not a resident at the dorm, Lopes Harris said.

Escobar has no prior arrests with the university's police department, she said.

The arrest happened outside a house on Reed Street. Investigators carried evidence out with them as curious neighbors watched everything unfold.

"I saw all the cops chasing some guy," said area resident Ramiro Ramirez. "They threw him on the ground and they were all yelling. They took him. They arrested him."

Escobar allegedly roamed the hallways of the dorm early Friday morning, checking doors to see if they were unlocked and entering rooms to grope the female students as they slept.

Lopes Harris said at least four women had come forward to say they had been groped since officers arrived at the 12-story Joe West Hall after receiving phone call reporting the first attack at 3:35 a.m.

“We got a call that a female student had been groped inside her room at Joe West Hall,” Lopes Harris said. “We responded immediately, began reviewing surveillance video and sending our officers through the dormitory. “

The university then triggered its reverse 911 warning system, alerting students of the attack and telling them to stay in their rooms and lock their doors.

Lopes Harris said all the women were groped in their Joe West Hall rooms. She described the suspect as a Hispanic male in his 20’s, wearing dark clothing.

“We have since learned there are four victims, all groped,” she said. “None of them have been injured or sent to the hospital...The circumstances (of the attacks) were similar...We did a full court press with our officers in the building – started waking up students, going door-to-door, searching every single crevice in the building. ”

“Our understanding is that he was going room-to-room…Many (of the students) were sleeping with unlocked doors,” she said. “We are reviewing our video to determine how far up and down the building this person may have traveled.”

Joe West Hall is one of four traditional residence halls on the San Jose State campus. It is a 12-story structure that houses 650 students in single and double occupancy rooms.

University officials are investigating how the suspect got in the building since he is not a resident and a key card is needed to enter.
