SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —

San Rafael police are searching for a man who opened fire on employees of a cell phone and check cashing store during an armed robbery last weekend.

Police said an armed man entered the Variedades Cellular at 26 Medway Road Saturday at around 7 p.m. and showed employees his gun, then demanded money.

The three employees then retreated to a back room of the store that is protected by bullet-proof glass. The suspect tried to follow the employees and fired a gun at them, narrowly missing them.

None of the employees were injured, police said.

The suspect then fled the scene.

Police described the suspect as an African American male in his late 20s or early 30s, 5-6” to 5-10” with a heavy build.  He was wearing a black hoodie with the hood pulled down over his face.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222.8477.
