SAN JOSE, Calif. —

Police late Thursday found and arrested the handcuffed suspect who managed to escape from custody by stealing an unmarked police van Wednesday afternoon in San Jose, authorities said.

Anthony Sanchez, 32, of San Jose was arrested for two outstanding probation violation warrants at about 3:30 p.m., police spokesman Sgt. Jason Dwyer said.

Sanchez was handcuffed and was being held in an unmarked San Jose police minivan.

While the arresting officer was standing near the van filling out paperwork related to the arrest, Sanchez managed to get his handcuffs around to his front, hop into the van's driver's seat and drive away.

Shortly after that, police said witnesses reported seeing a man with dangling handcuffs steal a truck from a 7-11 parking lot on Almaden Expressway.

Police located the van about two hours later near Almaden Expressway and Wren Drive but Sanchez was not found. There were no weapons in the van and nothing was stolen from it, Dwyer said.

Sanchez was later spotted at a jack in the box before being arrested at around 11 p.m. Thursday night.
