NORTH FAIR OAKS, Calif. —

A standoff with a suspect in as series of armed robberies in the Redwood City area ended peacefully after more than nine hours when authorities were able to take the man into custody at a home in North Fair Oaks early Thursday evening.

Miguel Angel Caballero, 30, has been tracked to a home on William Avenue near Third Avenue, where police and sheriff's deputies have been staked out since about 9 a.m., Lt. Larry Schumaker said.

Authorities told KTVU that Caballero was arrested shortly before 6:30 p.m.

Caballero is the prime suspect in five armed robberies that have occurred at businesses in Redwood City and North Fair Oaks since Aug. 7.

Investigators said that numerous tips came in following the release on Wednesday of video surveillance and photographs that clearly captured images of Caballero at the businesses while they were being robbed.

Berenise Nava, who was among those who recognized Caballero in a surveillance video released by investigators, watched the end of the 10-hour standoff from a rooftop on Williams Avenue.

“We were  just trying to see who came out, because I know (him),” Nava said. “It's shocking because I knew (him).”

Crisis negotiators talked to Caballero and  he surrendered and was taken into custody shortly after, said San Mateo County Sheriff detective Larry Schumaker.

During the standoff, neighbors were evacuated from nearby houses, and Caltrain service was disrupted as the house was near tracks.

After detectives cleared the scene, residents showed KTVU the garage where Caballero allegedly lived.

Neighbors said Caballero made a hole in the wall and climbed into the adjacent apartment in an attempt to evade the deputies who had him surrounded.

Even after the standoff ended peacefully, investigators took special precautions before entering the building to look for evidence.

“We sent our robot in, it's safer for us,” Schumaker said. “We have a camera on the other end, we can look for booby traps or anything that might hurt the officers making entry.”

Investigators walked out the suspect's home with at least one box of evidence.

Detectives said Caballero was living in the garage with a girlfriend, but he was alone when he was arrested.

Caballero was booked in the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of robbery.

He is believed to have robbed the Willow Market in Redwood City on Aug. 7, the Panaderia Michoacan Market in unincorporated Redwood City on Aug. 8, El Paisano Carniceria Market in unincorporated Redwood City on Aug. 9, the Valero Gas Station and Market in Redwood City on Saturday, and at the Mi Hacienda Taqueria in Redwood City on Tuesday.
