A registered sex offender was arrested in San Jose early Tuesday morning after a woman awoke to find him inside her home, standing over her bed, police said.

The 52-year-old woman, who lives in the first block of Southbrook Drive near where U.S. Highway 101 meets state Highway 85, woke up at about 3:15 a.m., saw the man and screamed, police Sgt. Jason Dwyer said.

She ran outside, and the man fled through a sliding-glass door, police said.

Two officers happened to be patrolling the neighborhood because of recent burglaries in the area, and arrived at the home within a minute and a half, police said.

The suspect, identified as Ryan Kamfolt, a 29-year-old transient, was found nearby pretending to be an onlooker, Dwyer said. He was detained after police determined he matched the description of the intruder.

Kamfolt is a registered sex offender and is on parole for burglary, Dwyer said. He was wearing an ankle bracelet and had a smartphone that was running an application that allowed him to monitor police scanner activity, police said.

He also had a pair of women's underwear in his pocket, and police are investigating where he got them, Dwyer said.

Investigators determined that Kamfold likely entered the home on Southbrook Drive by forcing open a kitchen window, police said.

The woman was not injured in the incident.

Kamfolt, who was in compliance with his registration requirements as a sex offender, was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of residential burglary and a parole violation, police said.
