A man was hospitalized due to injuries he incurred in a shooting near Hilltop Mall in Richmond early Saturday morning, police said.
Officers received reports of the shooting around 1 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Hilltop and Shane drives, according to police.
Police said the man struck by the gunfire was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening.
Witnesses said three men approached the victim on foot and shot him, but officers were unable to locate the suspects, according to police.
About 10 minutes prior to the shooting, a Richmond police officer in the Hilltop area heard a gunshot and stopped a car suspected in connection with the gunfire in the 2400 block of Lancaster Drive, according to police.
During a search of the vehicle, the officer found a handgun and arrested the car's two occupants for possession of a firearm.
Police said it is unclear whether the shot fired and the later injury shooting were connected.
