A police officer was knocked unconscious and another suffered a possible broken nose while trying to break up a fight near the Powell Street cable car turnaround early Sunday morning, a police spokesman said.
At 2:04 a.m., the officers saw a man punching someone in the area of Powell and Ellis streets, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.
As the officers tried to break up the altercation, another man approached and began attacking the officers, knocking one unconscious and punching the other in the nose, Esparza said.
Police were eventually able to arrest the suspect, identified as Jerry Lovette Young Jr., a 25-year-old Tracy man, according to Esparza.
Young was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and assault on police officers, as well as for two outstanding warrants out of Santa Clara County, Esparza said.
The man who had started the initial fight, Damoon Arman, 25, of Pleasanton, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
Both officers were taken to a hospital to be treated for their injuries, which were not life-threatening, Esparza said.
Watchdogs are questioning an exclusive agreement between the City of Oakland and a non-profit group, tapped to lead a multi-million dollar project to redevelop the area around the Coliseum BART station.
