A 14-year-old San Jose boy is still in critical condition Wednesday after being hit by a car while riding his bike last week.

The boy, Angel Hernandez Perez, remains unconscious in critical condition at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, said Oscar Leon, principle at Ocala Middle School where Perez is an eighth grader.

Angel was hit around 4:29 p.m. on April 16 while riding his bicycle westbound on Tully Road. Turning south, he made a turn into the path of eastbound traffic and collided with a green, 1992 Toyota pickup truck. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Leon said that Angel is suffering from serious injuries to his brain, as well as a broken leg and clavicle.

The driver of the truck, a 34-year-old San Jose man, remained on scene after the accident, cooperated with police, and was not at fault, police said.

Leon said he went to visit Angel in the hospital today, and that the boy's mother had been with her son at the time.

Students at Ocala Middle School have made cards and banners for Angel and sent them to his hospital room, Leon said.

The school is also working on organizing a fundraising event for Angel and his mother, who Leon says gets paid by the hour and is struggling to balance work and visiting her son at the hospital.
