SAN JOSE, Calif. —
A candle light vigil brought together at least 50 people Saturday to a South San Jose apartment complex, the site of the city’s 40th homicide of the year.
The group mourned the death of 22-year-old Robert Agulto, who was shot early Saturday morning on the 1500 block of Kooser Road in the victim's apartment complex.
Agulto was found on the 2400 block of Samaritan Drive at 1:24 a.m.
The victim suffered from at least one gunshot wound and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police couldn’t say much about the investigation other than they do have witnesses who are cooperating with investigators.
The victim's family told KTVU that Agulto, a father of a 3-year-old and 1-year-old, was dedicated to his family.
Agulto's mother sat down with KTVU and spoke about her 22-year-old son, who was one of her four sons.
She said she only knows bits and pieces about what may have happened and said she heard her son was fighting with someone and then whomever the argument was with, took out a gun and shot him in the head.
“Why do they have to get a gun and take someone's life?” said Evelyn Agulto, the victim’s mother. “That's what I don't get. How can they do that to someone and live with themselves?”
Last year's homicide rate hit 40, just shy of the city's record of 43 homicides in 1997.
This past August, police dealt with a violent crime spree lasting 11 days where eight people were killed.
The department's spokesman said with less than 10 of this year's murders being gang related, he's reluctant to tie the uptick in homicides to gang rivalry.
Police have made no arrests as of Saturday afternoon.
