SAN JOSE, Calif. —

San Jose Police on Tuesday night were trying to piece together what happened in the city's 44th homicide of the year.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon in what one neighbor said used to be the safest zip code in San Jose.

Fairhaven Drive is located just south of Willow Glen.

The original emergency call came in at around 3 p.m. regarding a vehicle accident.

Paramedics found a white Chevy pick-up truck against a tree and a person bleeding nearby on the street.

"[The injury was] definitely not caused by a car accident," said San Jose Police Sgt. Jason Dwyer. "We don't even know if that person was in the car."

Investigators initially said the victim was a 16 year old boy who appeared to be shot. About two hours later, they said it is more likely the victim was stabbed in the neck and could be 18 or older.

"If I could sum up this crime scene in one way, it would be a geometry scene. There's a lot of weird angles," said Dwyer. "There's going to have to be some evidence pieced together. Our crime scene unit who are some of the best in the business are going to have their work cut out for them tonight."

The 44th homicide of the year for San Jose marks the highest annual total for the city since 1991.

Police said the neighborhood is not known for gang activity and considered the homicide an isolated incident.

"We have a very nice neighborhood here and we've never had anything like this before," said neighborhood resident Paul Hancock.

"[I'll] stay at home with the wife at night a little bit more," said area resident George Jeffers. "You know, there's not a whole lot you can do. What are you going to do? Move?"

Police said the coroner's office will make the final determination on what caused the person's death and give some insight on the identity of the victim.
