Two people driving a reportedly stolen car in San Jose were hospitalized Wednesday evening, having been shot by a police officer after they allegedly attempted to run him over.
The incident began at about 4:30 p.m., when San Jose Police responded to a report of a man and a woman driving a stolen car near the 1800 block of Almaden Road, according to Ofc Albert Morales, public information officer for SJPD.
Officers arrived on scene and quickly located the vehicle, reporting that the woman was driving and the man was in the passenger seat, said Morales.
After boxing in the suspect’s vehicle with their patrol cars, police attempted to make contact with the driver, according to Morales.
As an officer approached the vehicle, the driver reportedly reversed then drove in the direction of the officer, hitting him and another car, said Morales.
“At some point the officer was struck by the vehicle -- in an attempt to get out the way of the vehicle,” said Morales. “The officer, in fear for his safety, pulled out his firearm and discharged into the vehicle, striking the driver.”
Reportedly 5 or 6 shots were fired and the driver was struck at least once.
Witnesses told KTVU that the woman had her arm bandaged and was bleeding.
It was unclear later Wednesday if the passenger was shot, but both were taken to Valley Medical Center to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The suspects were later identified as 31-year-old Robin Fillie of San Jose, the driver, and 23-year-old Samuel Rose of San Jose, the passenger.
Morales said that the officer involved who was struck by the vehicle was not injured and per department protocol, was placed on paid leave until the investigation was concluded.
San Jose Police’s homicide unit was investigating the shooting Wednesday, according to Morales.
Wednesday’s incident was the 3rd officer involved shooting this year in San Jose.
