SAN PABLO, Calif. —

Police are attempting to locate a man suspected of gunning down and killing a romantic rival in San Pablo last month, a police sergeant said Thursday.

Donte Marquee Smith, 24, allegedly shot and killed 30-year-old Dejuan McDonald, the new boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend, as the victim rode in a car driven by the girlfriend in San Pablo the morning of Dec. 21, Sgt. Scott Cook said.

"It appears that he was definitely ambushed by Donte," Cook said. "It's clear that they were targeted."

McDonald was taken to Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo, where he died from multiple gunshot wounds. His girlfriend was uninjured.

Cook said Smith was identified that day as the suspect in the slaying.

The sergeant said investigators "have an idea of where he might be," but declined to comment further.

Police are now asking for the public's help in finding Smith, a black man who is 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs about 180 pounds and has brown hair and black dreadlocks. The suspect was last seen driving a black 1996 Nissan Sentra with tinted windows and California license plate 6EKW879.

He is considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call local law enforcement or San Pablo police at (510) 215-3150.
