SAN LEANDRO —

A male suspect shot multiple rounds at an undercover police officer in an unmarked car Wednesday night in San Leandro before eluding capture in a dark-colored car, police said.

Around 9:20 p.m. undercover San Leandro police detectives were in the area of Anza Way and Aloha Drive conducting surveillance for a narcotics investigation when the officers observed a suspicious vehicle, according to police.

The detective sergeant attempted to follow the car in his undercover police car when the suspect made a U-turn and drove directly toward the sergeant in the 300 block of Aloha Drive, police said.

As the suspect drove past the sergeant the driver rolled down his window and shot multiple rounds at the sergeant from about 6 feet away, police said.

The rounds struck the sergeant's vehicle and the sergeant did not suffer any injuries. The sergeant then drove after the suspect through city streets and onto southbound Interstate Highway 880 to Interstate Highway 238 and into Castro Valley. The suspect continued onto eastbound Interstate Highway 580 driving at speeds above 100 mph, according to police.

The suspect was able to elude capture and was last seen by law enforcement on eastbound I-580 near state Highway 13 in the Oakland area.

No suspect information is available. The suspect vehicle was described as a dark-colored Acura, according to police.
