SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

A Galt man police say shot and killed an animal control officer has been released from a hospital and booked into jail.

Joseph Corey had been in police custody at a Sacramento hospital since Thursday after a 17-hour standoff came to an end.

The standoff began when police say Corey fatally shot an animal control officer called to retrieve pets believed to have been left behind when Corey was served an eviction notice at his home in Galt, a suburb of Sacramento.

Authorities say the officer — 45-year-old Roy Marcum — was killed when Corey fired a shotgun when Marcum and a bank employee knocked on the door.

The Lodi News-Sentinel reported Monday that while the 65-year-old Corey was hospitalized he was not allowed visitors.

The nature of the care he received while hospitalized has not been released.
