DUBLIN, Calif. —

A man charged an Alameda County deputy with a ‘Rambo-style’ knife early Friday before he was shot by the officer and detained, authorities said.

Alameda County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said the wounded man’s father called 911 to report his son was acting erratically around 9:20 a.m. in the 7500 block of Frederiksen Lane.

“It happened quickly,” Nelson said of the confrontation with the deputy.

Within minutes of his arrival, the veteran deputy confronted the man outside the home and the suspect charged him with the knife.

The 28-year-old suspect -- identified as Brian Cox by a neighbor -- was wounded in the arm and subdued, although Nelson said he continued to struggle with deputies despite an arm wound.

He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Neighbor Albert Ybarra said Cox has had a history of problems and authorities had been to the home before.

"There are times when he's fine and sometimes when he's not," Ybarra said.

There is a school nearby, Frederiksen Elementary on Tamarack Drive, but Nelson said the shooting did not involve the school in any way.

The deputy was placed under administrative leave pending an investigation.
