SAN FRANCISCO —

A suspicious device was determined to be harmless and removed from a bus stop in downtown San Francisco early Tursday, ending a police lockdown.

The device – about the size of a shoebox – was discovered at the base of the bus stop near the corner of Powell and Cyril Magnin at about 7:15 a.m.

San Francisco police immediately cordoned off several blocks around Powell and Market and a bomb squad unit was called to the scene.

BART and municipal transit officials shutdown the Powell Street cable car turnaround and Muni Metro/BART service to the Powell Street station.

All traffic was also shut down busy Market Street during the height of the morning commute.

A robot was launched to take a close look at the device and it was determined to be harmless. An all clear was issued just before 8 a.m.
