SALINAS, Calif. —

Two bystanders and two targeted victims were shot outside a shopping center in Salinas on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Officers were dispatched around 2 p.m. to a report of a shooting in the 600 block of Williams Road.

When police arrived at the scene, they found four people had been struck by gunfire, including two intended victims, a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old man, and two bystanders, a 39-year-old woman and her 20-year-old son.

Police believe two men in their early 20s wearing dark clothing approached the victims and that at least one of the men began shooting at the victims.

The mother and son were on the sidewalk selling trinkets about 70 to 80 feet away from the intended victims when they were hit by the gunfire, police said.

Police believe that the two suspects fled on foot toward the intersection of Bardin Road and Cross Avenue.

All four victims were transported to the hospital for treatment, but police have not disclosed the extent of the victims' injuries.

The shooting is still under investigation, police said.
