SANTA CRUZ, Calif. —
A crew of 269 volunteers Friday morning removed nearly 1,500 pounds of litter from 11 beaches left by people during the Fourth of July in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, an advocacy group spokeswoman said.
The organization Save Our Shores, which oversees the annual shoreline cleanup campaign after the summer holiday, had about 30 more unpaid helpers than last year, group spokeswoman Rachel Kippen said.
"It shows our efforts are successful because we had more volunteers this year to pick up less trash," Kippen said.
The exact figure was 1,496.5 pounds of waste from beachgoers -- about 100 pounds less than in 2012 -- that volunteers picked up from the sand and took away in buckets from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., Kippen said.
The 30-year-old group, based in Santa Cruz, holds what it calls its Star Spangled Beach Cleanup the day after July 4 each year to protect marine life habitats along the coasts of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.
For the first time, Save Our Shores on Tuesday had large Dumpsters placed at four beaches where people are known to leave behind the most trash, Kippen said.
The Dumpsters helped lessen what was left behind and provided more capacity than the small receptacles at the beaches, Kippen said.
"On celebration days like this, the garbage cans overflow," Kippen said.
The volunteers cleaned up nine beaches in Santa Cruz County and two in Monterey County this morning, Kippen said.
In Santa Cruz County, they went to Cowell Beach, Main Beach, Capitola City Beach, Moran Lake Beach, Panther/Yellowbank Beach and Seabright, Twin Lakes, Seacliff and Rio Del Mar state beaches.
In Monterey County, volunteers cleaned Carmel Beach and Del Monte Beach.
Watchdogs are questioning an exclusive agreement between the City of Oakland and a non-profit group, tapped to lead a multi-million dollar project to redevelop the area around the Coliseum BART station.
