ALAMEDA , Calif. —

A stolen 42-foot boat slammed into the breakwater of Alameda's Ballena Bay early Friday, triggering a massive water search for a possible missing person and the arrest of a woman, authorities said.

Alameda Fire Division Chief Matt Tunney said the water search by Alameda, Oakland and Coast Guard crews had been cut back after several hours.

“It was a difficult search,” he told KTVU. “The water is dark in color and there was no light. We’ve done the best we could.”

The incident began with a cellphone call to the Coast Guard at 1:48 a.m. reporting the crash.

“We found a boat up on its side… and assisted a female who was on the boat,” Tunney said. “Alcohol was involved… She was taken into custody by the police.”

The woman told authorities there was another woman on the boat. A search was launched immediately and eventually involved a Coast Guard helicopter and boat and marine search units from Alameda and Oakland. Alameda police also searched the shoreline for any sign of the woman.

A boom had been deployed near the wreckage to contain a small fuel spill from the boat.

Jeff Leonard, who was a broker trying to sell the boat, said it had been anchored in a marina at Jack London Square.

“I was really shocked,” Leonard told KTVU. “When you fire up a boat like that it makes a lot of noise. Somebody had a certain amount of skill inorder to take the boat out from Jack London Square and get it around this far. They had to go through the boat inorder to find the keys. It had to be more than one person.”

The boat had been on the market for about a year with a $100,000 price tag.
