Woman gunned down riding bike on Berkeley street

BERKELEY, Calif. —

A woman was fatally shot late Tuesday night as she rode her bike on a street near Berkeley’s Longfellow Middle School, authorities said.

Berkeley police officer Randy Files said authorities got a 911 call reporting on person down on the street at 1500 Derby St.

Arriving officers found the middle aged woman unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound on the sidewalk.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident was being investigated as a homicide – the fourth in Berkeley this year.

Police are asking anyone with information on the case to call the department's homicide unit at (510) 981-5741, the non-emergency number at (510) 981-5900, or Bay Area Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous, police said.
